Gardening diary - our weekly guide and topical tips for your English country garden and allotment.

Week thirty nine September 23rd - September 30th

Hardy perennials are easily split up and moved in the Autumn and benefit from dividing every few years giving you the opportunity to work some manure into the borders. Grape hyacinths, bulbous irises, crocus, squill and miniature daffodils will all have been available in the shops for some time now; if you haven't planted any yet don't delay for much longer. If the weather has been wet and warm then make the most of this ideal time for planting the wide variety of trees and shrubs that will be available this month and next.
