Norwich Pops Orchestra

'Tunes You Know and Love'

St. Andrews Hall, Norwich - Sunday June 15th 2003 at 7.30pm

In February of this year, Geoff Davidson and I decided to form a 'Pops'
orchestra based in Norfolk performing British Light Music, Songs from the
Shows and popular classics. This largely came about after both being
involved in very successful productions staged by Norfolk and Norwich
Operatic Society in the Theatre Royal, Norwich with Geoff as Musical
Director and I as leader of the orchestra. Geoff noted that large numbers of
the audience were staying at the end to listen to the play-out music. With
the obvious popularity of this wonderful music and a ready-made orchestra
(not to mention singers for a choir), it was a natural step to the creation
of an orchestra in Norwich that would play extremely popular music for the
enjoyment of listeners and players alike, filling a large gap in the musical
life of Norfolk and beyond.

Now we are delighted to announce the inaugural concert of the Norwich Pops
Orchestra on Sunday 15th June (Father's Day) in St Andrews Hall, Norwich.
The orchestra has 42 players drawn mainly from the principal seats of the
N&N Operatic Society Orchestra, Academy of St Thomas & Norwich Philharmonic
Orchestra. Additionally, some members are either young professional players
who live or study in Norfolk or who are currently studying at Music College.
One of the aims of the orchestra is to provide a platform for young players
to gain wider experience of playing in a professional capacity whilst
learning good, popular repertoire.

Geoff Davidson's long career as a singer & conductor has included regular
appearances as 'star' singer on Radio 2's Friday Night is Music Night and he
is delighted that this new orchestra will deliver a similar kind of format
right on our own doorstep. In the programme for our special Father's Day
Concert, will be treats such as Eric Coates's Dam Busters March, The Blue
Danube by Johann Strauss, the theme from the film Superman, Coronation Scot,
music from Showboat and some light classics like the theme from Dr. Finlay's
Casebook. In addition to this we are very pleased to welcome guest singer,
English National Opera's splendid tenor, Eugene Ginty. He will be singing
three of Mario Lanza's greatest hits, Be My Love, Because and the Serenade
from 'The Student Prince' plus a couple of operatic favourites, Puccini's
Nessun Dorma and together with Geoff, the Pearl Fishers Duet by Bizet.

We hope this exciting new project will be of interest to members of your
society / organisation and that with your support it will prove to be a
great success. Concessions and group discounts to parties of 10 or more are
available. Tickets are on sale now from Prelude Records, 25B St. Giles
